The Power Assisted Technique

Power-Assisted Liposuction, or PAL, enjoys two advantages. It is known to be a highly effective method of removing both larger amounts of fat, such as around the thighs and under the arms, and contouring fine areas such as the cheekbones and chin. As with other Liposuction methods, the main tool used in PAL is a cannula, a thin vacuum-like tube used to suck out fatty tissue. Unlike in other methods however, the cannula used in PAL is either gas- or electricity-operated and vibrates gently during the procedure. PAL is performed as a second step after the cocktail used in the Tumescent Technique has been injected into the patient's fatty tissue. The cannula is inserted through a small surgical incision on the skin, and upon contact with the fat, begins to vibrate at an extremely high frequency. These vibrations separate and loosen up fat cells, and can subsequently be sucked out of the body with great ease. The vibrations also break up the fat cells quicker than with many other Liposuction methods, resulting in more noticeable results in a shorter time frame.

Like all methods associated with the Tumescent Technique, the use of only local anaesthesia (usually in the form of Lidocaine) greatly reduces trauma and risk while minimising pain for the patient. The precision of the vibrating cannula prevents most surrounding fatty or other tissue from getting damaged, allowing for rapid recovery time and few risks of complications. Patients often marvel at the minimal bleeding and bruising they experience post-surgery. Because the vibrations are soft and not subject to a surgeon applying his/her own force in operating the cannula, PAL is one of the gentlest surgical Liposuction techniques available.
